# What happens if my domain expires?

Domain names are rented for a fixed term. When the term ends the domain does not vanish at once, but risks start to build up step by step.

### How the process works

1. **Expiry date:** your domain is active until this date. Renewal reminders are sent by email beforehand.
2. **Grace period:** many extensions have a short grace period after expiry. You can renew during it, but your website and email may stop working.
3. **Redemption:** after the grace period some extensions allow renewal for an additional fee.
4. **Release:** when all periods have ended the domain becomes available to anyone.

Periods differ by extension.

### How to protect it

- Turn on auto-renewal.
- Keep your contact email address up to date.
- Pay the renewal invoice before the due date.
