# What is WHOIS? How do I hide my personal details?

WHOIS is the public registry that shows who a domain name is registered to.

### What appears in a WHOIS record?

- The registrant name and contact details (depending on the extension)
- Registration and expiry dates
- The registrar and the name servers of the domain

### Why hide it?

Publicly visible contact details can be used for spam, unwanted calls and fraud attempts.

### WHOIS privacy

With WHOIS privacy on, proxy details are shown instead of your personal contact details. At TiklaWeb WHOIS privacy is free and can be turned on from your domain management on supported extensions. Some extensions do not allow details to be hidden because of their registration rules.
