Adding an email account to your phone and Outlook (IMAP/SMTP)
When you add your email account to your phone or to an email program on your computer you need the server details.
IMAP, POP3 and SMTP
- IMAP: keeps messages on the server; you see the same mailbox on several devices. It is the recommended method.
- POP3: downloads messages to the device; they may not appear on other devices.
- SMTP: the protocol for sending email.
Typical settings
Your email or hosting provider gives you the exact server names; they are often in the form mail.yourdomain.com.
- Incoming server (IMAP):
mail.yourdomain.com, port 993, SSL/TLS - Incoming server (POP3): port 995, SSL/TLS
- Outgoing server (SMTP): port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS)
- Username: your full email address
- Password: the password of the email account
- Outgoing server authentication: on
Steps
- Open the add account section on your phone or in Outlook.
- Choose manual or other account and type your email address.
- Enter the values above.
- Send and receive a test email.
Troubleshooting
- Try the password first by signing in to the email through the web.
- Check the port and the encryption type.
- If sending does not work, make sure outgoing server authentication is on.
