What are the transfer lock and the Auth (EPP) code?
When you move a domain from one provider to another you meet two terms: the transfer lock and the Auth (EPP) code. Both protect your domain against unauthorised transfers.
Transfer lock
A security setting that prevents the domain from being moved to another provider. A transfer can only be started while the lock is off. It is best kept on; remove it only when you are about to move the domain.
Auth (EPP) code
A code specific to your domain that works like a one-time password. You must enter it when requesting a transfer to the new provider. You can get it from your current provider panel; never share it with anyone.
Order of steps
- Remove the transfer lock at your current provider.
- Get the Auth code.
- Create the transfer request at the new provider and enter the code.
- Turn the lock back on once the transfer is complete.
