What are the transfer lock and the Auth (EPP) code?

Domains 22 views Markdown

When you move a domain from one provider to another you meet two terms: the transfer lock and the Auth (EPP) code. Both protect your domain against unauthorised transfers.

Transfer lock

A security setting that prevents the domain from being moved to another provider. A transfer can only be started while the lock is off. It is best kept on; remove it only when you are about to move the domain.

Auth (EPP) code

A code specific to your domain that works like a one-time password. You must enter it when requesting a transfer to the new provider. You can get it from your current provider panel; never share it with anyone.

Order of steps

  1. Remove the transfer lock at your current provider.
  2. Get the Auth code.
  3. Create the transfer request at the new provider and enter the code.
  4. Turn the lock back on once the transfer is complete.
