What are NS (name servers) and A records?

Domains 21 views Markdown

Whether your domain points your website and email to the right place depends on its DNS settings. This guide explains two basic concepts in plain language.

What is an NS (name server)?

Name servers are the servers that hold your domain's DNS records. You edit the DNS records on whichever name servers your domain points to. Domains registered with TiklaWeb use ns1.tiklaweb.com.tr and ns2.tiklaweb.com.tr by default. If you use another hosting provider or service, you can enter the name servers they give you.

What is an A record?

An A record connects a domain name (or subdomain) to an IPv4 address. For example, an A record is used to point example.com to your web server's IP address. Your hosting provider tells you the server's IP address.

Other common records

  • CNAME: points one name to another name (for example www).
  • MX: defines which server receives email.
  • TXT: used for verification and email security (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).

When do changes take effect?

DNS changes usually spread worldwide within minutes to a few hours, and in rare cases take up to 24-48 hours.
