What happens if my domain expires?

Domains 26 views Markdown

Domain names are rented for a fixed term. When the term ends the domain does not vanish at once, but risks start to build up step by step.

How the process works

  1. Expiry date: your domain is active until this date. Renewal reminders are sent by email beforehand.
  2. Grace period: many extensions have a short grace period after expiry. You can renew during it, but your website and email may stop working.
  3. Redemption: after the grace period some extensions allow renewal for an additional fee.
  4. Release: when all periods have ended the domain becomes available to anyone.

Periods differ by extension.

How to protect it

  • Turn on auto-renewal.
  • Keep your contact email address up to date.
  • Pay the renewal invoice before the due date.
